Woman Arrested After Drowning Niece, 6, at Wedding; Confesses to Three Earlier Child Murders

PANIPAT, India — A woman has been arrested and confessed to drowning her six-year-old niece at a family wedding because she believed the child "looked prettier than her," according to local police. In a subsequent interrogation, the woman reportedly admitted to murdering three other children in recent years. The incident occurred on Monday, December 1, during wedding celebrations in Panipat, a city in northern India. The victim, identified as Vidhi, was attending the event with her immediate family. Her father received a call informing him she was missing, prompting a search. Approximately an hour later, Vidhi's grandmother found the child deceased in a nearby storeroom with her head submerged in water. Police Inspector Killed in Checkpoint Attack in Edo State

A Nigerian police officer was fatally shot on Friday after gunmen opened fire at a security checkpoint in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. According to a statement released by the Edo State Police Command, the incident occurred around noon. Officers at the checkpoint attempted to flag down a black, unregistered Lexus SUV with heavily tinted windows, but the vehicle refused to stop. As police moved to conduct further checks, an occupant of the vehicle fired at an Inspector from the Ekiadolor Area Command at close range. The assailants then fled the scene. The officer died instantly from his wounds. Following the attack, the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate, full-scale investigation and a manhunt for the perpetrators.
