The motorsports world is in mourning following the tragic deaths of retired NASCAR champion Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, son Ryder, and a family friend in a plane crash on Wednesday morning.
The private Cessna C550, owned by Biffle's company GB Aviation Leasing LLC, crashed shortly after takeoff at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina around 10:15 a.m. local time. The airport is located approximately 45 miles north of Charlotte, a hub for many in the racing industry.
A Flight for Fun Ends in Tragedy
According to Garrett Mitchell, the popular YouTuber known as Cleetus McFarland, the Biffle family was en route to spend the day with him in Bradenton, Florida, when the accident occurred. "Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane… because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us," Mitchell stated in a somber online post. "We are devastated."
Authorities confirmed the plane was "fully engulfed" in flames upon impact. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken over the investigation, which will include a review of adverse weather conditions reported at the time of the crash, including heavy drizzle and low cloud ceilings.
Remembering a Champion and Philanthropist
Greg Biffle, 55, was one of NASCAR's most accomplished drivers. He is one of only a handful to win championships in both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (2000) and the Busch Series (2002). Competing at the Cup level from 2002, he amassed 19 career wins and was named one of NASCAR's 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023.
In recent years, Biffle became widely known for his philanthropic work, particularly through the Greg Biffle Foundation, which focused on animal welfare. He was also an active responder during natural disasters; in 2024, he used his personal helicopter to deliver supplies to communities devastated by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina.
The crash also claimed the life of a family friend, Craig Wadsworth, who was on board. The Statesville Regional Airport remains closed as investigators work to clear the wreckage and determine the cause of the tragedy that has left the racing community and fans heartbroken.
