A Nigerian police officer was fatally shot on Friday after gunmen opened fire at a security checkpoint in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. According to a statement released by the Edo State Police Command, the incident occurred around noon. Officers at the checkpoint attempted to flag down a black, unregistered Lexus SUV with heavily tinted windows, but the vehicle refused to stop. As police moved to conduct further checks, an occupant of the vehicle fired at an Inspector from the Ekiadolor Area Command at close range. The assailants then fled the scene. The officer died instantly from his wounds. Following the attack, the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate, full-scale investigation and a manhunt for the perpetrators.
