A senior police armourer in Niger State has died after shooting himself during a high-level investigation into a syndicate supplying arms and ammunition to terrorists.
The incident occurred on Thursday as operatives from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) conducted an audit of the state police command's armoury in Minna. The officer, DSP Abdullahi Isah, was reportedly being investigated for his alleged role in illegally diverting weapons to bandits.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, Isah shot himself in the head with a pistol he picked up within the office during the audit process and died instantly.
The investigation was triggered after the NSA's office uncovered a network within the police command involved in arms dealing. Further interrogation led to the arrest of Inspector John Moses, attached to the Niger State Government House. Moses allegedly confessed that the late DSP supplied him with arms and ammunition, which were then sold to bandits in the Shiroro local government area through an informant.
Four other police officers attached to the deceased DSP have also been arrested and are undergoing interrogation. The officers who accompanied Isah to the armoury are facing an orderly room trial for alleged negligence.
In a separate but related case, the police also busted another arms trafficking syndicate in the Pandogari area. A 35-year-old woman, Zuwaira Usman, was arrested for allegedly transporting 2,500 rounds of AK-47 ammunition concealed in a flask to a contact in Birnin-Gwari.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adamu Elleman, confirmed the events, stating that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of DSP Isah's death. A special team from the NSA's office is now guarding the armoury around the clock.
