Nigerian military forces successfully defended a strategic base in Borno State on Thursday, repelling a sophisticated, multi-pronged assault by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists that included surveillance drones, mortar fire, and heavy gunfire.
The attack on "Battalion Headquarters Alfa" began around 7:57 p.m. when troops from the Joint Task Force North East under Operation Hadin Kai spotted three enemy drones conducting aerial reconnaissance over the base. As soldiers mobilized to counter the unmanned aerial threat, the attackers initiated a ground assault, firing two mortar rounds followed by a heavy barrage of small arms fire.
A Robust Defense and Terrorist Retreat
The troops mounted an immediate and powerful counter-defense with overwhelming firepower. This ground response was bolstered by timely close air support from the Nigerian Air Force, creating a decisive combined arms operation. The coordinated defense forced the attacking terrorists to break off their assault and flee in chaos toward the nearby Mangari area.
Remarkably, no Nigerian soldiers were injured and no military assets were lost during the intense engagement, a significant tactical victory for the forces.
Sweep Reveals Abandoned Arsenal
In the aftermath of the repelled attack, troops conducted a security sweep of the surrounding area. The operation yielded a significant cache of weapons and ammunition abandoned by the fleeing ISWAP fighters. Items recovered include:
* Six Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) bombs and charges
* 366 rounds of 7.62mm x 51mm ammunition
* A large quantity of spent PKT machine gun belt links
This successful defense underscores the ongoing intensity of operations in Northeast Nigeria. Operation Hadin Kai remains committed to proactive missions aimed at restricting terrorist movements and systematically dismantling their combat capabilities in the region.
