A mortuary in Benin City, Edo State, descended into chaos on Saturday after a grieving family made a horrific discovery while preparing to collect their loved one's body.
The relatives alleged that vital internal organs were missing from the deceased man's corpse, triggering an angry confrontation with mortuary staff and leading to a violent scene at the facility.
The Gruesome Discovery and Outrage
The incident unfolded when family members arrived to retrieve the body for burial. According to a woman who recorded the chaotic scene and posted it to social media platform X, a shocking discovery was made during the preparations.
In a now-viral video, the woman is heard exclaiming in the local Pidgin English: "Dead body wey we come carry, nothing dey inside o! Nothing dey inside him chest; dem carry nylon full inside him belle." (Translation: "The dead body we came to collect has nothing inside! There's nothing in his chest; they filled his stomach with nylon.")
The allegation sent the gathered crowd into a frenzy. Family members and onlookers accused the mortuary attendants of organ harvesting, a grave criminal and ethical violation.
Violent Confrontation and Staff Escape
Faced with a growing, furious mob, the mortuary staff were reportedly forced to flee for their safety. In the video, they are seen being hastily loaded into a minivan (a bus) to escape the facility.
As the vehicle tried to drive away, the angry crowd gave chase, hurling stones and shouting in protest. The staff managed to escape the immediate vicinity, but the incident has left the community in shock and the facility's reputation in tatters.
As of this report, there has been no official statement from the mortuary management or the Edo State Police Command regarding the specific allegations. The video, however, continues to circulate widely, fueling public anger and demands for a thorough investigation into practices at the facility.
The case highlights deep-seated public fears and mistrust regarding the handling of the deceased and has raised serious questions about oversight in mortuary operations.
