PANIPAT, India — A woman has been arrested and confessed to drowning her six-year-old niece at a family wedding because she believed the child "looked prettier than her," according to local police. In a subsequent interrogation, the woman reportedly admitted to murdering three other children in recent years.
The incident occurred on Monday, December 1, during wedding celebrations in Panipat, a city in northern India. The victim, identified as Vidhi, was attending the event with her immediate family. Her father received a call informing him she was missing, prompting a search. Approximately an hour later, Vidhi's grandmother found the child deceased in a nearby storeroom with her head submerged in water. She was pronounced dead after being rushed to a local medical college.
Police Superintendent Bhupender Singh stated that the suspect, identified as Poonam, is the girl's paternal aunt. According to the investigation, Poonam committed the act when most guests were away from the house. She allegedly saw Vidhi climbing stairs to the terrace, followed her, and engaged her in conversation.
"After having her placed in a plastic tub filled with water outside the storeroom, she drowned the child in the tub, then bolted the door from the outside, and came down," Superintendent Singh told media.
During police interrogation, Poonam reportedly stated that "she didn't want anyone to look more beautiful" than her at the wedding and that she was "irritated by beautiful girls."
Confession Reveals a Pattern of Murders
The investigation took a more horrific turn as Poonam allegedly confessed to the murders of three other children, all of whom she is related to. Police revealed that the family had previously believed these deaths to be tragic accidents.
According to her reported confession:
* In 2023, she murdered her nine-year-old niece, her sister-in-law's daughter.
* Later in 2023, she drowned her own young son, allegedly to divert suspicion from herself.
* In August 2025, she killed a young girl in a nearby town, again motivated by the child's appearance.
"Poonam committed these crimes one after the other," a police official stated. The investigation into all four deaths is ongoing.
