Social Media Star Peller Arrested by Lagos Police Over Alleged Suicide Attempt and Reckless Driving

Popular 20-year-old social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat, known online as Peller, has been arrested and detained by the Lagos State Police Command for alleged attempted suicide and reckless driving that caused a serious road accident.

The arrest, confirmed by the police in a statement on Tuesday, follows a viral video from Sunday, December 14, which showed the suspect dangerously driving a vehicle while live-streaming his actions on social media. The reckless act reportedly led to a severe crash, endangering the influencer's life and the lives of other road users.

Police Statement and Investigation

Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi, speaking on behalf of Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh, stated that Hamzat's actions "constituted a deliberate attempt to take his own life and posed grave danger to innocent members of the public."

The suspect is currently in custody, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe. "The suspect will be charged to a court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law," the police confirmed, adding that the investigation's outcome will be made public upon conclusion.

A Strong Warning to Content Creators

CP Jimoh used the incident to issue a strong warning to social media influencers and content creators against promoting dangerous or unlawful acts for online content. He cautioned that such actions can breach public peace and cause untimely deaths, stressing that the Command "will not tolerate any form of lawlessness."

"The full weight of the law will be applied to anyone found culpable," the statement added. The police also urged all road users to comply strictly with traffic regulations, reaffirming their commitment to public safety.
