A 35-year-old man has been arrested by the Katsina State Police Command for the alleged murder of a 30-year-old nursing mother and her 10-month-old baby. The killings, which occurred in Sheme village within the Faskari Local Government Area, are said to have resulted from a violent dispute over the paternity of the child.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, confirmed the arrest on Friday, stating that the primary suspect has confessed to the crime. According to the confession, the suspect, Sahabi Rabi'u, and an accomplice who remains at large, lured the woman and her infant to a secluded area on the outskirts of the community. There, they were attacked, killed, and their bodies set on fire before being disposed of in a well in a brutal attempt to conceal the crime.
Following the investigation, police recovered the victims' bodies from the well. The suspect remains in custody as authorities intensify efforts to track down and apprehend his fleeing partner.
The Commissioner of Police for Katsina State, Bello Shehu, condemned the act in the strongest terms, describing the killings as "barbaric." He assured the public that the command is committed to ensuring all individuals involved face the full weight of the law. Commissioner Shehu also appealed to residents to come forward with any credible information that could aid the investigation, guaranteeing that such information would be handled with strict confidentiality.
This tragic incident has drawn widespread attention across Nigeria, prompting renewed public discourse about domestic violence, paternity conflicts, and the urgent need for stronger community-based intervention systems to prevent such extreme outcomes.
