Zimbabwean Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Raping Mother-in-Law

A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in Zimbabwe after a court convicted him of raping his 56-year-old mother-in-law during a violent home invasion, an attack witnessed by the victim’s elderly mother.

A Harare regional court has sentenced Walter Maponga, 37, to 15 years imprisonment for the rape and assault of his 56-year-old mother-in-law in a case that has horrified a rural community.

Magistrate Jessie Kufa found Maponga guilty following a trial where the prosecution presented what the court described as a clear and established case. The attack occurred on September 17, 2025, in Makoni Village, Mhondoro.

According to evidence presented by prosecutor Blessed Songozo, Maponga broke into the victim's bedroom, where she was with her 94-year-old mother. He then began assaulting her, demanding sex while accusing her of causing problems in his marriage. The assault was halted when neighbors, Godfrey Makoni and Cleopas Nziramasanga, intervened, rescued the victim, and detained Maponga at the scene.

In her verdict, Magistrate Kufa stated, “The State had managed to prove a prima facie case against Maponga.” The brutal nature of the crime, committed in the presence of the victim’s elderly mother, has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising severe concerns about familial violation and safety.

The swift action of the neighbors was credited with preventing further violence and ensuring the perpetrator was apprehended for trial.

In a significant and provocative claim, Nigerian Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has alleged that international actors are providing backing to terrorists operating within the country. During an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Sheikh Gumi pointed to deteriorating security in areas that had shown marked improvement. He specifically highlighted the Abuja-Kaduna highway, which had become safer for travelers, and the farmlands around Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, where farmers had cautiously returned to their fields after years of abandonment.
