A prominent Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for nominating Reno Omokri as an ambassador and embracing former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, accusing the President of rewarding critics who previously attacked his character.
A major Yoruba socio-cultural group has issued a stern rebuke of President Bola Tinubu’s recent political appointments, labeling them a “national embarrassment.” The organization, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, specifically condemned the ambassadorial nomination of Reno Omokri and the continued political inclusion of Femi Fani-Kayode.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the group’s Convener, Olusola Badero, argued that both men had publicly leveled severe allegations against President Tinubu before aligning with him. The statement highlighted that Omokri had previously led protests against Tinubu at London’s Chatham House and repeatedly accused him of involvement in narcotics controversies.
“It is shocking, embarrassing, and deeply troubling that President Tinubu would nominate someone like Reno Omokri,” the group stated. “This is a man who openly called him a drug baron, insulted him globally, and mobilized protests to discredit him.”
The group also recalled Fani-Kayode’s past criticisms, noting he had once mocked Tinubu’s health and fitness for office while echoing similar drug-related allegations.
The Union framed these appointments as part of a dangerous pattern that rewards “individuals lacking moral credibility” and prioritizes political loyalty over integrity. It warned that such a transactional approach to governance risks encouraging opportunism and damaging Nigeria’s international reputation.
“This nation deserves better,” the statement concluded. “Nigeria cannot rebuild with compromised characters steering the ship of state.”
The criticism adds to the growing public and political scrutiny surrounding President Tinubu’s nomination choices, setting the stage for a contentious confirmation process.
