LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed two fatalities and two serious injuries resulting from two separate road accidents that occurred during the early hours of Monday, December 8, 2025.
The first and more deadly incident took place at approximately 2:30 a.m. on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. According to a preliminary report from LASTMA, an unregistered vehicle carrying two occupants was traveling at excessive speed when it collided with a heavily-laden trailer. The impact killed both individuals in the car instantly. Authorities reported that the driver of the trailer fled the scene with the vehicle.
LASTMA's 24-hour Night-Gang teams, stationed in the corridor, responded promptly. They evacuated the victims' bodies from the roadway to prevent further danger and cleared the wreckage. Officers from the Isheri Police Division provided support, and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) later took custody of the remains.
A second, unrelated crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. on the Third Mainland Bridge near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront. The collision involved an empty tanker and a water distribution van (registration number SMK 67 XH), leaving two people with severe injuries. Personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) provided immediate first aid before transporting the victims to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
In response to the tragedies, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased. He lamented the preventable loss of life, attributing it directly to reckless speeding and a disregard for road safety regulations.
"The Agency maintains its firm and uncompromising insistence on adherence to government-prescribed speed limits," Bakare-Oki stated. He emphasized that such compliance is essential for preserving lives and avoiding catastrophic tragedies.
Bakare-Oki also commended the diligence and rapid response of the LASTMA personnel, affirming the agency's commitment to continuous 24-hour surveillance and traffic management across Lagos State.
