In a significant shift ahead of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, seven aspirants within the All Progressives Congress (APC) have stepped down from the party's primary race.

The decision followed a meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, focused on fostering party unity and presenting a single, strong front for the upcoming election.

After discussions, the aspirants agreed to rally behind Bola Oyebamiji as the consensus candidate for the party's primary. This move is widely seen as an effort to reduce internal competition and streamline the APC's campaign strategy.

Notably absent from the meeting was a key aspirant, Iyiola Omisore. His boycott follows his recent public criticism of being disqualified from the primary, which he previously labeled "a joke." His absence highlights lingering tensions within the party's ranks.

The seven aspirants who withdrew are: former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke, Babatunde Haketer Oralusi, and Mulikat Abiola Jimoh.

Party sources indicate the consensus was reached following appeals from senior stakeholders who emphasized the importance of avoiding a divisive primary contest.
