REMI TINUBU V. GOV ADELEKE: First Lady Clarifies Event Remarks, Dismisses "Needless Controversy"

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has publicly addressed the criticism she faced after directing Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to shorten his remarks during a high-profile event over the weekend, framing the backlash as an overreaction by critics.

The incident occurred at the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, where Mrs. Tinubu was being honored with the traditional title of Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua. As Governor Adeleke delivered his goodwill message and performed a short celebratory dance, the First Lady interjected from her seat at the high table, stating: "Enough with the music, or I’ll switch off the microphone. Conclude in five minutes."

The public directive, made in front of gathered dignitaries, was captured on video and quickly circulated online, sparking a wave of commentary. Many social media users criticized the tone as abrupt and disrespectful toward a sitting governor. This episode followed closely on the heels of another viral moment from the same event, where Mrs. Tinubu's interaction with former First Lady Patience Jonathan was also perceived by some as a slight.

On Tuesday, December 10, the First Lady responded to the controversy on her verified Facebook page. She posted a photo from the event showing her smiling alongside Governor Adeleke, seemingly in a cordial moment. In her statement, she suggested that the uproar was manufactured and insignificant.

"Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society," Mrs. Tinubu wrote. "More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinize every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy."

Her statement did not offer a direct apology or express regret for the specific remark but instead positioned the criticism as a routine hazard of public life, implying her action was a necessary part of managing the event's schedule. By characterizing the incident as a "minor misstep" blown out of proportion, the First Lady's response appears aimed at closing the discussion and moving past the brief diplomatic stir.

Sheikh Gumi Alleges Foreign Powers are Financing Terrorists in Nigeria

Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has accused unnamed foreign nations of supporting terrorist groups in Nigeria, citing a sudden reversal of security gains in recent months as evidence of external interference. In a significant and provocative claim, Nigerian Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has alleged that international actors are providing backing to terrorists operating within the country. During an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Sheikh Gumi pointed to deteriorating security in areas that had shown marked improvement. He specifically highlighted the Abuja-Kaduna highway, which had become safer for travelers, and the farmlands around Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, where farmers had cautiously returned to their fields after years of abandonment. "The situation on the ground contradicts earlier signs of improvement," Gumi stated, arguing that the recent surge in attacks suggests renewed support for armed groups. "This sudden rever...

DSS Arrests Medical Doctor Accused of Supplying Drugs to Kwara Kidnapping Syndicate

Intelligence-led operation in Jebba uncovers healthcare professional allegedly aiding criminal networks. In a significant breakthrough, Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a licensed medical doctor for his alleged role in supporting kidnapping gangs terrorizing parts of Kwara State. The arrest followed a targeted interception in the Jebba area, based on precise intelligence regarding the movement of supplies to criminal elements. According to security officials, the doctor was caught transporting medical provisions from Sokoto State intended for kidnappers operating within Kwara. This development suggests that recent security operations have been effective, leaving some gang members wounded and in urgent need of care. “These criminal networks are becoming increasingly desperate for medical assistance following sustained engagements with security forces,” a DSS official stated.
