U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the unilateral cancellation of all documents signed by an autopen during his predecessor's administration, declaring pardons, executive orders, and other legal instruments from the Biden era legally invalid.
In a sweeping and unprecedented move, President Donald Trump has declared all official documents signed via autopen under the Biden administration to be "null, void, and of no further force or effect."
The announcement was made by the President on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday. The order targets a wide range of documents, including executive orders, memoranda, contracts, and notably, legal pardons granted by former President Joe Biden.
"Anyone receiving 'Pardons', 'Commutations,' or any other Legal Document so signed, please be advised that said Document has been fully and completely terminated," President Trump stated in the post.
This action follows through on Trump's longstanding criticism of the autopen—a mechanical device used to replicate a signature—which he has suggested was used to authorize actions without President Biden's full knowledge or capacity. The Trump White House has prominently displayed the device Biden used, and even replaced Biden's portrait in a White House gallery with an image of the autopen.
The declaration directly impacts several high-profile pardons issued by Biden in his final hours in office, which included pre-emptive clemency for his son, Hunter Biden, his brother James Biden, former infectious disease chief Dr. Anthony Fauci, and members of the congressional committee that investigated the January 6th Capitol attack.
President Biden has previously denied that aides acted without his consent, telling *The New York Times* in July, "I made every single one of those... They know it," referring to critics as "liars."
The move has been celebrated by Trump's political allies. The Heritage Foundation's Oversight Project thanked the President for acting on its investigations, while House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) stated, "I applaud President Trump for deeming President Biden’s autopen actions NULL AND VOID."
Legal scholars are expected to vigorously debate the constitutional authority and enforceability of the President's declaration, setting the stage for potential court challenges. The action represents Trump's latest effort to delegitimize the procedural outcomes of the Biden presidency and the 2020 election.
