ILE-IFE, Nigeria — The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, marked the tenth anniversary of his coronation on Saturday with the formal launch of Ojaja University in Ile-Ife, describing the institution as a pivotal model for educational reform in Nigeria.
The inauguration of the university's campus served as the centerpiece of celebrations for the traditional ruler's decade on the throne. In his address, Ooni Ogunwusi framed the project as a non-profit legacy initiative dedicated to national development.
The event garnered high-profile support, notably from the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, who was present to commend the Ooni's substantial investments in education and healthcare. "I thanked Almighty Allah during our time that we have people like you who is really committed to enhancing the life of our people," the Sultan stated.
University officials outlined a vision that extends beyond conventional academics. Professor Lere Baale, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, declared Ojaja University a "cultural embassy" and a "centre for African leadership renewal," designed to nurture entrepreneurs, scientists, agriculturalists, and scholars.
Echoing this sentiment, the Vice-Chancellor of Ojaja University's Eyenkorin campus in Ilorin, Professor Jeleel Ojuade, praised the establishment as a powerful "tool for generational empowerment."
The ceremony was attended by a gathering of prominent traditional rulers and dignitaries, including the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi; the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin; and the Iyalaje Oodua, Chief Toyin Kolade, among others.
