Joint air-ground operation inflicts heavy casualties on retreating militants following failed infiltration attempt.
CHIBOK, Borno State - A major assault by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on the town of Chibok was decisively repelled early Saturday in a coordinated counter-operation by the Nigerian military, security officials confirmed.
An estimated 300 insurgents launched a multi-front attack on military positions around 3:00 a.m., targeting the 28 Task Force Brigade, Sector 4 of Operation Hadin Kai. Troops engaged the attackers in a sustained firefight, halting the advance and forcing a disorganized retreat.
"No casualties were sustained by our forces, and all equipment remained secure," a military official stated, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief the press.
The operation transitioned to an air interdiction phase as the militants withdrew toward the forested Timbuktu Triangle. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) deployed combat aircraft and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), executing a series of precision strikes along the escape corridor.
Military sources described the strikes as highly effective, inflicting significant casualties and preventing the retreating force from regrouping. The joint response leveraged real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) to track and engage scattered militant pockets.
The pre-dawn engagement underscores the persistent threat in northeastern Nigeria despite sustained military pressure. Chibok, internationally known for the 2014 abduction of over 250 schoolgirls, remains a symbolic and strategic location within the conflict zone.
Analysts note that the ability to rapidly integrate air and ground assets represents a critical evolution in the military's tactical response, aimed at denying militants the operational sanctuary they have long exploited in the region's difficult terrain.
The Defence Headquarters is expected to release an official statement detailing the operation's results later today.
