A Michigan mother has been charged with first-degree murder after prosecutors allege she and the victim's stepfather tortured and killed her 22-year-old pregnant daughter, then cut the unborn baby from her womb in a wooded national forest.
A Michigan woman has been charged with the murder of her pregnant daughter in what prosecutors are calling a "truly horrific homicide."
Cortney Bartholomew, 40, and the victim's stepfather, Brad Bartholomew, were arrested and charged on Tuesday with first-degree murder, torture, and assault on a pregnant individual resulting in death. The victim, 22-year-old Rebecca Park, was nearly 39 weeks pregnant when she visited her mother on November 3 and subsequently vanished.
According to prosecutor Johanna Carey, the couple lured Rebecca to their home in Boon Township, forced her into a car, drove her to the Huron-Manistee National Forest, stabbed her, and cut the unborn child from her womb. The baby has not been found. Rebecca's body was discovered three weeks later by her biological father after her phone was located in the area.
Describing the alleged crime, Carey called Cortney Bartholomew "evil personified." While a motive was not disclosed in court, investigators believe the couple intended to kill the unborn child.
Brad Bartholomew faces a habitual offender notice that could result in a life sentence. Two other individuals—Rebecca's half-sister and her fiancé—were also arrested on unrelated charges following the discovery of the body.
The case has shocked the local community and highlights an extreme and gruesome instance of familial violence.
