The Lagos State Police Command has issued a firm rebuttal to a viral video that accused an Inspector of Police of stealing, labeling the online narrative as "false and misleading." The command provided an alternate account, stating the incident stemmed from a traffic enforcement operation that turned violent.
The Official Account vs. The Viral Video
The widely circulated footage showed a uniformed officer with blood on his face, sitting on the ground while an angry crowd chanted "Ole!" (Thief). The police statement offered a different sequence of events:
* The Assignment: The Inspector was on official duty with the Lagos State Taskforce, enforcing a ban on illegal parking along Brown Street in Oshodi.
* The Confrontation: He stopped a motorist attempting to park wrongly. The motorist allegedly became violent, leading to a heated argument.
* The Discharge: During the confrontation, the Inspector "accidentally discharged shots onto the road," with debris from the impact affecting some passersby.
* The Assault: This action incited a mob, which then violently attacked the officer, causing him serious injuries.
Disciplinary and Legal Consequences
In response to the incident, the police have taken action on two fronts:
1. Against the Officer: The Inspector has been subjected to internal **disciplinary actions for "unprofessional conduct."
2. Against the Assailants: Thirteen suspects seen assaulting the officer in the video have been arrested. They are currently in custody and will be prosecuted after investigations conclude. Those arrested include Dele Oriade (39), Adekunle Olalere (40), Mudashiru Olamilekan (28), and ten others.
Command's Balanced Stance
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, struck a balanced tone in the statement. He condemned the "unprofessional conduct of the personnel involved" but also issued a strong warning that "assaulting law enforcement officers is a criminal offence and will not be condoned under any circumstances."
The Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and continue to cooperate with the police.
