A UK judge has handed down lengthy prison sentences to two Afghan asylum seekers for the rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in a Warwickshire park, condemning the attackers for betraying genuine refugees and robbing their victim of her childhood.
Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, both 17, were sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on Tuesday for the assault, which occurred in a park in Leamington Spa on May 10, 2025. The court heard that the pair, who arrived in the United Kingdom months earlier after crossing the English Channel in small boats, attacked the teenager despite her desperate pleas for help from passersby.
A Desperate Cry for Help, Ignored
During the trial, footage recorded by the victim on her mobile phone was played in court. The video showed her being led away from her friends by the two defendants while she called out for assistance. The girl later described how people nearby failed to intervene despite her visible distress. CCTV evidence corroborated her account, showing the attackers moving her to a secluded area of the park.
Eventually, a man stopped to help. He assisted her in reaching a local police station, where authorities collected crucial evidence.
In a powerful victim impact statement read in court, the girl described how the assault had shattered her life. “I am no longer a carefree teenager. I no longer feel safe going out, and this has impacted my education during GCSEs,” she stated, highlighting the profound and lasting trauma.
Sentencing and a Strong Judicial Rebuke
Judge Sylvia de Bertodano sentenced Jahanzeb to ten years and eight months in prison, while Niazal received a sentence of nine years and ten months. The judge accepted a legal challenge to lift reporting restrictions, allowing the defendants to be publicly named.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge de Bertodano delivered a stinging rebuke, stating that the pair had "betrayed genuine refugees" with their actions and had "robbed her of her childhood."
The judge noted that both attackers were living in taxpayer-funded accommodation at the time of the offense. She confirmed that Jahanzeb faces deportation, and while Niazal may not be automatically deported due to his age at the time of his guilty plea, she would recommend that the Home Secretary consider deporting both individuals.
