Gunmen in Broad Daylight Robbery Cart Away Millions on Ilorin's Busy Murtala Muhammed Way

In a brazen daytime attack, a four-man armed robbery gang targeted a driver on a major road in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Friday, making off with millions of naira and leaving a trail of gunfire and injuries.

The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. along Murtala Muhammed Way, directly opposite the Vanguard Newspaper office. Eyewitnesses reported that the masked assailants, arriving in an ash-colored Toyota Corolla, trailed the victim's grey Toyota Sienna (marked AA 693 GT) to the spot.

Details of the Attack

The robbers opened fire on the Sienna, deflating two of its left tires and forcing the driver to stop. Three masked men emerged from the Corolla while a fourth remained as the getaway driver.

To terrorize bystanders, the gang fired several shots into the air, causing residents and passersby to flee for safety. However, stray bullets struck the Sienna driver in the arm and pierced the vehicle's front and rear windshields and body.

The robbers then reportedly transferred "cartons full of money" from the Sienna into their Corolla before speeding away from the scene.

When contacted, the state Police Commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the development, stating, "I was informed, and we are working to get the guys involved." An investigation is now underway.

Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has accused unnamed foreign nations of supporting terrorist groups in Nigeria, citing a sudden reversal of security gains in recent months as evidence of external interference. During an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Sheikh Gumi pointed to deteriorating security in areas that had shown marked improvement. Intelligence-led operation in Jebba uncovers healthcare professional allegedly aiding criminal networks. In a significant breakthrough, Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a licensed medical doctor for his alleged role in supporting kidnapping gangs terrorizing parts of Kwara State. The arrest followed a targeted interception in the Jebba area, based on precise intelligence regarding the movement of supplies to criminal elements. According to security officials, the doctor was caught transporting medical provisions from Sokoto State intended for kidnappers operating within Kwara. This development suggests that recent security operations have been effective, leaving some gang members wounded and in urgent need of care. “These criminal networks are becoming increasingly desperate for medical assistance following sustained engagements with security forces,” a DSS official stated.
