Five students of Rivers State University were kidnapped early Tuesday morning by suspected cultists in an isolated area near the school's Emohua campus, marking a brazen security breach just hours after local authorities arrested suspects in a previous campus attack.
Gunmen believed to be cultists kidnapped five students from Rivers State University in a pre-dawn attack on Tuesday, December 2nd. The abduction occurred in the Rumuche/Rumuohia community, an isolated area near the university's campus in Emohua Local Government Area.
According to the Rivers State Police Command, about five assailants carried out the attack at approximately 2:30 AM, shooting sporadically before taking the students to an unknown location. The police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in an official statement.
This kidnapping follows closely on the heels of another security incident at the same campus. Just 24 hours earlier, on Monday, local authorities had arrested two suspected cultists for their alleged involvement in an attack on students. The Chairman of Emohua LGA, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, had visited the suspects at the police station and assured the public they would be prosecuted.
In response to the latest abduction, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, alongside other security commanders, conducted an on-site assessment of the scene. CP Adepoju has mandated the Area Commander and all tactical units, including a joint task force, to intensify search efforts to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
"The Commissioner further assured that all suspects involved will be brought to justice and made to face the full wrath of the law," the police statement read. The public has been urged to remain calm and provide credible information to aid the investigation.
The consecutive incidents have raised serious concerns about security around the university campus and the escalating activity of cult groups in the region.
