The Edo State House of Assembly has summoned its member, Natasha Osawaru, to appear before its Ethics Committee over a controversial viral video the legislature says has brought the House into "public disrepute."
Edo State lawmakers have formally intervened in the private dispute of one of their own, calling Hon. Natasha Irobosa Osawaru to answer for a publicly circulated video. The House, during Tuesday's plenary, directed the member representing Egor constituency to appear before its Committee on Ethics and Privileges within one week.
The summons follows the spread of a video clip online showing Osawaru, who is married to Nigerian music star Innocent "2Baba" Idibia, in a heated exchange at a shop in London's airport. In the footage, she is heard repeatedly shouting, "Don't do it. Don't fucking do it," and questioning why someone is raising their voice at her.
Addressing the Assembly, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku expressed deep disappointment, stating that the lawmaker's actions had "dragged the name of the House in the mud for too long." He emphasized that the negative media trend surrounding the incident was embarrassing for the legislative body.
"This House is a decent and reputable House... the best House in Nigeria," Agbebaku declared. "The attitude or the misconduct of a single member cannot be allowed to drag the House to disrepute."
The Speaker directed the Ethics Committee to investigate and submit its report within two weeks. The committee will determine whether Osawaru's conduct, as captured in the viral video, constitutes a breach of the Assembly's code of conduct and has damaged the institution's public standing.
The move underscores the increasing scrutiny placed on public officials' private conduct in the age of social media, where personal moments can swiftly become matters of official accountability.
