Drunk Raccoon Found Unconscious After Liquor Store Break-In in Virginia

Animal control officers in Virginia were called to an unusual crime scene over the weekend: a raccoon found passed out in the bathroom of a liquor store after a night of breaking bottles and apparently drinking scotch.

A Virginia liquor store had an unexpected visitor over the Thanksgiving weekend when a raccoon broke in and went on a solo drinking spree, leading to its eventual discovery—unconscious and hungover—on the bathroom floor.

Staff at the Ashland ABC store arrived on Saturday to find smashed bottles and spilled alcohol, including scotch, pooled on the floor. The "masked bandit" had apparently fallen through a ceiling tile before embarking on what animal control officer Samantha Martin described as a "full-blown rampage, drinking everything."

The raccoon was found passed out between a toilet and a trash can in the store's restroom. Officer Martin transported the disoriented animal to the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter to sober up. After a few hours of rest and showing no signs of injury, the raccoon was safely released back into the wild.

In a social media post, the store thanked the animal shelter for providing their unexpected guest with a "sober ride home." Officer Martin summed up the incident as "just another day in the life of an animal control officer."

The store was closed for Thanksgiving at the time of the break-in, making the raccoon's "Black Friday" adventure a lonely, if spirited, affair. Only one blurry CCTV image exists of the nocturnal escapade.
