A convicted child sex offender in the United Kingdom has attempted to avoid deportation to his home country of India by swallowing a vape battery, a move a High Court judge described as a deliberate ploy to be hospitalized and delay removal.
The individual, identified in court as Sharma, was convicted in Scotland in 2024 for sexual activity with a child and supplying Class B drugs. He was initially sentenced to three years in prison but was released in November 2024 and transferred to a secure immigration detention center. Following his release on bail in May 2025, authorities struggled to find approved accommodation that would keep him away from schools and areas frequented by children, so he remained in custody.
According to court proceedings reported by multiple UK outlets, Sharma swallowed the battery in a calculated attempt to disrupt the deportation process. The Home Office had been actively arranging his removal after facing repeated delays from the Indian government in providing necessary travel documents.
This was not the first scheduled deportation attempt. A flight arranged for November 6, 2025, was ultimately cancelled because Indian officials again failed to file the correct paperwork in time. In light of his actions, Sharma has since been moved to a secure immigration center near Glasgow, a location authorities believe will make it harder for him to find objects to swallow in further attempts to derail his removal.
At a recent High Court hearing in London, the Home Office stated that Sharma's removal was "likely imminent" and emphasized that he poses a risk to the public. The court also heard that he has failed to comply with bail conditions on several occasions and has committed further criminal offences.
