APC Chieftain, Security Expert Urges Federal Government to Prioritize Border Fencing


A prominent security expert and leader within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has added his voice to growing calls for the urgent construction of fortified security fences along Nigeria's porous international borders, citing a critical need to stem terrorist infiltration and arms trafficking.

In a strong appeal to the Federal Government, security specialist and APC chieftain, Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has emphasized the need for immediate and comprehensive action to secure Nigeria's land borders. He warned that the country's currently unguarded frontiers are a direct gateway for terrorists and a major contributor to the nation's escalating security crisis.

Mumuni's call aligns with a similar recommendation made earlier this year by the newly appointed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), who highlighted border security as fundamental to combating the influx of weapons and the movement of insurgents.

The security expert proposed a specific solution: the installation of technologically advanced border fences equipped with transponder systems for real-time detection and monitoring of unauthorized crossings. He pointed to successful international models, such as the security barriers utilized by Israel and the fortified borders between the United States and Mexico, as well as India and Pakistan, as worthy examples for Nigeria to consider.

"Investing in border security infrastructure will not only prevent cross-border terrorism but also improve the general security architecture of the nation," Mumuni stated. He stressed that Nigeria's geographic position, sharing boundaries with multiple nations, makes it exceptionally vulnerable to exploitation by armed groups, a vulnerability recently underscored by security incidents.

Mumuni, a certified counter-terrorism practitioner, described the situation as critically urgent. He argued that a robust, technology-enabled border fence would dramatically enhance Nigeria's capacity to monitor threats and respond swiftly, thereby safeguarding citizens and strengthening national stability.

"This initiative deserves urgent attention and adequate funding as a matter of national priority," he concluded, urging the Tinubu administration to prioritize and draw inspiration from these proven global security measures.
