Nigerians are mourning the death of Alhaji Ado Bayero, Emir of Kano, as thousands of people have attended the funeral of the late Emir, who is perhaps the country's most prominent and revered Muslim leader.
Al-Haji Ado Bayero, who has been on the throne since 1963, died after a long illness at the age of 83. The announcement of his death was made by palace officials on
Friday morning - and thousands of people have since been pouring into
the city, where they gathered in the grounds of the emir's palace.
The emir had recently returned home from London where he had been receiving treatment. President Goodluck Jonathan, said that the emir would be remembered for his "immense wisdom", noting that "He (the emir) used his exalted throne to build bridges of unity,
friendship and harmony across the nation."
